INSPIRATION In thinking about place values, I wanted to see if I could create a lesson that connected both addition and place value. I think learning this is key! I was looking up different worksheets on how to incorporate addition with two digits and the connection with place value. I saw this song on education.com which talked about breaking up the number, or as I have heard before "decomposing the number" Check out the song here: https://www.education.com/game/place-value-song/ This inspired me to come up with this lesson! I thought about chopping numbers, and it reminded of the fun video game that is currently out called "Fruit Ninja" so I wanted to call this lesson "Addition Ninja" FRUIT NINJA Here are some images of Fruit Ninja to give you an idea of what the game looks like ADDITION NINJA To combine the game with two-digit addition, I would first demonstrate with fruits drawn on the board. COUNTING BACK MONEY Dealing with money is a very crucial lifelong skill! I grew up on a farm and I would always help my Grandma run our corn stand. We had a cash register, but my Grandma would never let us use the register to do the math for us. She would always say, "people these days are lazy and don't even know how to count back change without the help of a calculator!" She was determined to have us learn how to count back change! I thought it would be perfect to do a lesson on counting back money. 2ND GRADE COFFEE SHOP WORKSHEET The first part of this lesson is to review money. Each student will get their "piggy banks" which will be an envelope with a pig on it. Inside will be printable money so they can actually review what it looks like. The next step is to practice what it means to count back money with a real life scenario-a coffee shop! MATH CAN BE FUN- SAY WHAT?! In thinking about this class, and thinking about the numerous topics that are going to be covered, I was trying to think how I could possibly make all of this material- fun! In my most recent math class observation, in an inclusion first grade classroom setting- the teacher had all of the students participating in Math Game Fridays! The students absolutely loved this- and I found each and everyone of them excited about math during this period. I was thinking about starting basic, and within each topic area of this blog I discover, I thought it would be fun to include a math game with each post.  I then came across a website called "Buggy and Buddy" and it really inspired me. I found a really simple, but fun activity. The best part of this activity is that it incorporates Math, Reading, and Art/Creativity. What inspired me about this activity was how I can start to combine all subjects for fun activities. This would allow students to ...
