DOLLA DOLLA BILL Y'ALL!
COUNTING BACK MONEY
Dealing with money is a very crucial lifelong skill! I grew up on a farm and I would always help my Grandma run our corn stand. We had a cash register, but my Grandma would never let us use the register to do the math for us. She would always say, "people these days are lazy and don't even know how to count back change without the help of a calculator!" She was determined to have us learn how to count back change! I thought it would be perfect to do a lesson on counting back money.
2ND GRADE COFFEE SHOP WORKSHEET
The first part of this lesson is to review money. Each student will get their "piggy banks" which will be an envelope with a pig on it. Inside will be printable money so they can actually review what it looks like.

To enhance this lesson- I would have objects to help the students and we could actually act it out. I would have students get in groups and practice each problem and practice counting the money back. I would be floating around the room to check on the students counting.
To further the lesson, I would then have the students create their own menu and prices and then as a class we could create problems!
I thought this was a fun lesson in which students could practice counting back money in a real life scenario! Grandma would be proud!

This is a great way to have the class interact and make math fun for all students. I think as teachers sometimes we get so overwhelmed with the amount of lesson plans we have to create and the pressures of making sure a lesson is engaging, this is a great example that a lesson doesn't have to be lengthy or overly complicated. Nice post Mackenzie!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your feedback Tanisha! I think that is a really great point- sometimes lessons don't have to be this crazy complicated thing- they can be simple and effective in getting the material across! I am going to remember that moving forward for sure!
DeleteNice progress on your PLP!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much professor!
