IT'S A DIVISION PARTY!

INTRODUCTION

When it comes to multiplication and division there are just some facts that students need to know. This fluency is addressed in Common Core standard 3.0A.C.7 Operations & Algebraic Thinking: "Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as knowing the relationship between multiplication and division."

PARTY MONSTERS DIVISION MAKER

This game works on the standard above, and is played with partners. How it works- partner  #1 will try to make a division equation using all three of the columns. Once a number is used, it is covered with a counter. Once a counter is placed over a number, it stays there and that number can't be used. Both partners will keep going until the last person can make an equation- that person is the winner.

Teaching Points: If the students are struggling- you can remind them to go from the right to left, using multiplication to help them. This will help them see the relationship between multiplication and division. This game can be also modified by having students check their work with the opposite operation.

LONG DIVISION TRICKS

After mastering basic division fluency, long division comes next. I am a huge fan of finding fun and relatable tricks for students to remember concepts. I saw this on Pinterest and loved it! I don't know about you guys, but I had never heard of this before, but now I definitely won't forget it.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

This semester has really made me appreciate the art of a good concept teaching game. I think these can be used very often in the classroom to get students excited about math, all while helping them master a concept. I am also starting to understand the reasons behind the common core and how all the standards connect with each grade level. Lastly, I can't wait to use the long division trick with my students since I had never heard of that before!

  1. Hi Makenzie. Your post is very creative. I think the party monsters division maker is a great way to make division fun. Division can be extremely challenging for students. Your activity removes some of the pressure from the students. I think it is great that this game can be modified to show the connection with multiplication, which may help the students with their division comprehension. The division family is a wonderful way to help students conquer division. This is my first time seeing this. It definitely would have been helpful when I was learning division. Again great post-Makenzie.
