PLACE VALUE, I CHOP YOU!
INSPIRATION
In thinking about place values, I wanted to see if I could create a lesson that connected both addition and place value. I think learning this is key! I was looking up different worksheets on how to incorporate addition with two digits and the connection with place value.
I saw this song on education.com which talked about breaking up the number, or as I have heard before "decomposing the number" Check out the song here:

This inspired me to come up with this lesson! I thought about chopping numbers, and it reminded of the fun video game that is currently out called "Fruit Ninja" so I wanted to call this lesson "Addition Ninja"
FRUIT NINJA
Here are some images of Fruit Ninja to give you an idea of what the game looks like
ADDITION NINJA
To combine the game with two-digit addition, I would first demonstrate with fruits drawn on the board. Our first example would be a watermelon and pineapple. The watermelon would have the number 53 on it and the pineapple would have 46 on it. Now, I would ask a student to come up to the board and "NINJA CHOP" the 53- this would go into 5 and 3. There would be a place value machine on the board. The student would have to place the 5 into the "Tens" column and the 3 into the "Ones" column. The same would be done for the pineapple 43, I would have a student "NINJA CHOP" the 4 and 3 into the correct place value columns.
I would then show another method of adding the two numbers using the place value machine, but adding down this time. This just gives students another way of adding. See image below for a visual of what it would actually look like.
PRACTICE WORKSHEET (Featuring my thumb)
Students can then practice with different fruits! Sorry for my terrible drawings.
PERSONAL REFLECTION
I really thought this was a creative lesson that I have come up with. I think its important to try and keep the material relatable to students, a lot of whom love video games and technology. I think it would be important to include the place value, while still learning how to add two digits. I think a modification to make this harder would be to start working with two digit addition where the numbers carry over into the next place value (i.e. the last problem on this worksheet) A modification to make this easier would be to add one two digit number and a single digit number.
I hope you guys like my lesson! I had a lot of fun creating it and I hope it works well with students!

Makenzie! I absolutely love how you incorporated the fun and engaging game fruit ninja and made your own version with addition ninja. I think this is a clever and inventive idea that I hope i can use with my future students some day. I like how the students can visually see a representation of the numbers they are working with as fruits. Its important to make sure lessons are relevant and relatable. This spin on fruit ninja will definitely engage students and make them understand place value in a new way. Great Job Makenzie !
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your feedback! I was a little nervous if this would actually work with students, but I am trying to think of ways to relate to them in such a technology/video game world they are growing up in!
