MEASURE ME, MEASURE YOU!

Measurement is one of those skills like telling time, or being able to count money. It is simply a lifelong skill that students must know!

This lesson plan is going to introduce measurement and specifically, it will focus on how to use a ruler. The next progression of the measurement unit will be pints, quarts, etc.

WHAT IS A RULER?!

All students will get their very own ruler that they get to keep with them. Students will get to understand what an inch is- with several objects that are 1 inch each. Students can touch the items- there will be 1 inch buttons, cap of a pen, etc. The students will understand that the big numbers and lines on the ruler are inches and the smaller lines are centimeters. Students should then demonstrate with their fingers how big an inch is. Students will then learn that 12 inches is equal to 1 foot.

The first worksheet will really help students understand what exactly a ruler is. This will help students get a good feel for what an inch is.

MEASUREMENT GAME

If you've been reading my blog so far, then you would know I love a good math game to go with each lesson. This game is pretty basic and allows students to just practice and get a feel for measuring different items. Students will have to go around the room and measure different sandcastles. It's like a version of eye spy, but just all sandcastles that are different heights. The students will first have to estimate what size they think the sandcastle is and then actually measure it. This will help students start to get an eye for the units of measurement, plus it allows students to be up and active in the classroom!

HOMEWORK SAY WHAT?

My mom has this really cool project to follow up on the measurement unit (see below). This requires students to measure their family members and report back to the class! This allows students to work on both feet and inches, and includes some art because they get to draw their family member! This is a great way to tie in art and math!

REFLECTION

I think this is a great unit and is very valuable for life skills. As mentioned, the next part of the lesson would be to include other units of measure. I think measuring is fun and once you know it, you know it!
